Progress Perhaps?

Even though I haven't been posting, I have been doing some fiber work. I continue to work on my project based on tree stumps. I have decided that I will make a series of three small (8"x11") pieces that I am going to enter into a show. This will be the first time I have ever entered anything so wish me luck. It's not due until January so I can manage the deadline and hopefully my pieces will be chosen. I'm thinking of calling them "Tree Stories" since growth rings on a tree show what has happened to the tree in it's lifetime. More on this later.

Here's a bag that I use to carry my fiber, wool etc. in when I need to travel. It was a canvas giveaway bag which was plain and ugly. So I have done the graffiti treatment on it. It isn't quite complete as I am going to do one more central piece to add to the front.

Here's the back.

And a close up. I think this is technique is fun because you just keep adding layer upon layer and if you mess up, it doesn't matter because you can just cover it up. I may add some more writing on the top layer as well. I haven't decided yet.

Here's a birthday card I made for DH. He liked it even though it isn't very manly.

August TIF - Balance

Here is my piece for the August TIF challenge. I had many thoughts about this one but I wasn't happy with any of my ideas. Then, when I was eating out at a restaurant on their patio, I looked over and there was this branch. And I thought - now that is balance. So this is the piece I made. I could tell you that each leaf represents a part of my life and some are given more importance than others blah, blah, blah... But, really I didn't go through all that. I think that nature can show us so much and balance is one of those things. I embellished the background on recycled felted sweater and then painted a heavy interfacing for the leaves. The branch is machine stitched cord couched down by hand. The stems are embroidery floss couched down by hand. I painted the veins on the leaves.

Here are a couple of close ups.

So now I'm off to the NW Montana Fair - we usher at the rodeo. Whoopee!

Glacier National Park

I've got more company so we went to Glacier National Park yesterday. I'm not getting much fiber work done but I got tons of inspirational photos of more stumps, bark and cool rock surfaces. Here's a photo of Avalanche Creek. Happy weekend!

Another Studio Journal Collage

Here's my last lesson for the studio journals class. It's another collage made from stuff I picked up off the ground except for the words and the two photos. Sadly enough, the photos were taken in the woods just up behind my house. Even the background began life as a flyer. It had been run over and stepped on so much that it was worn through. But so cool looking I couldn't resist picking it up and bringing it home. It made the perfect background for this collage. I volunteer two times a year to pick up garbage on two miles of highway south of Kalispell. I have to say it is quite disgusting what people throw along the side of the road. So this is my rant against littering.

Last week of Studio Journal Course

This is the last week of the online course I'm taking. It was such fun and I really learned a lot. I hope I can keep up my work in my studio journal. We're doing collages this week.

Here's a closeup.

And another.

More Stumps

Here's one of my ideas for a future piece with tree stumps.

I worked a few samples to see how I would like to do this piece. I don't care for this one much.

This idea worked better for me - as usual I go back to felt and I always seem to like that better.

Here's a close up. I think I'll try some with lighter felt background as there isn't enough contrast in this one. Plus all the stumps I've taken photos of are much more of a tan than a dark brown.

I did a backing for my July TIF "Halfway?". I think it looks better - now I just need to get a frame for it. Have a great weekend! I was so happy today to be able to get back into my work room as our company is gone and my niece is no longer inhabiting the room. Such a wonderful day to be able to do whatever I wanted without worrying about company. Short reprieve though, we've got more company next week.
